Car rental Madagascar: renting a vehicle is often the best way to discover the north of the island at your own pace. Between the Red Tsingy, Ankarana Reserve, Montagne d’Ambre and the road to Nosy Be, the most beautiful sites are spread out, and public transport does not go everywhere. You still need to choose the right vehicle, and decide whether to drive yourself or travel with a driver.
In this guide, we explain in simple terms how to rent a car in northern Madagascar: 4×4 or standard car, with or without a driver, which itineraries to plan from Diego Suarez, when to go and what to know before hitting the road. We are a local agency based in Diego Suarez: this advice comes from the roads we drive every day.
Why rent a car in northern Madagascar?
Northern Madagascar is best explored by car. The main sites are tens or hundreds of kilometres apart, often linked by a national road and then a dirt track. Having your own vehicle really changes the trip:
- You leave whenever you like. To see the Red Tsingy in the morning light or reach Ankarana early before the heat, nothing beats setting off on your own schedule.
- You go where bush taxis don’t. Several sites lie at the end of a track, far from regular routes.
- You save time. No waiting by the roadside, no connections: over a one- or two-week stay, the difference adds up to whole days.
- You travel in comfort, with your luggage, water and the freedom to stop for a photo or a village market.
For a family, a couple or a small group of friends, renting a car often costs barely more than a series of transfers, with far more freedom.
4×4 rental in Madagascar: with or without a driver?
This is the first question to ask yourself. Both options have their advantages, and the right choice depends mainly on your itinerary and your experience of driving on dirt roads.
| Self-drive | With a driver | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Drivers confident on tracks, itineraries mostly on paved roads | First trip to Madagascar, rough tracks, rainy season, business travel |
| Freedom | Total: you manage your own times and stops | High: the programme is still yours, the driver adapts |
| Driving | You handle the tracks, potholes and traffic | You enjoy the scenery, the driver knows every track |
| Navigation | GPS and maps, road signs are sometimes scarce | The driver knows the roads, shortcuts and good places to stop |
| Unexpected events | Flat tyre, blocked track: it’s up to you to find a solution | The driver knows how to react and speaks Malagasy |
| Budget | Price of the vehicle only | Price of the vehicle + driver (the driver’s accommodation and meals are usually included in the quote) |
Our advice: for a first stay in the north, or as soon as your route includes dirt tracks (Red Tsingy, Ankarana, SAVA region), a car with a driver is the safest and most relaxing option. Besides driving, a local driver-guide tells you about the region, its villages and its traditions.
4×4 or standard car?
In Diego Suarez town and on the paved road to Montagne d’Ambre, a standard car is enough. As soon as you leave the main roads, and especially during the rainy season, a 4×4 becomes essential: sand or dirt tracks, river crossings, ruts. For a full tour of the north, we almost always recommend a 4×4.

A sample 5-day road trip
- Day 1: Diego Suarez, its bay and the Emerald Sea.
- Day 2: Montagne d’Ambre, its rainforest, waterfalls and chameleons.
- Day 3: the Red Tsingy, at sunrise or late in the day for the best colours.
- Day 4: Ankarana Reserve, its grey tsingy, caves and lemurs.
- Day 5: drive down to Ambanja and Ankify port, then take the boat to Nosy Be.
This programme works very well with a 4×4 and a driver-guide, and can be extended to the SAVA region to discover the vanilla coast. When to rent a car in northern Madagascar?
The season matters a lot when you travel by car in Madagascar.
- From April-May to November, the dry season is the best time for a road trip. Tracks are passable, sites are open and days are sunny. The wind often blows hard around Diego Suarez from June to September, to the delight of kitesurfers.
- From December to March, the rainy season makes some tracks muddy, or even cut off after heavy rain. Part of Ankarana may close and journeys take longer. At this time of year, a 4×4 with a driver is no longer a comfort but a real safety measure.
During European holidays, in July-August and around Christmas, vehicles get booked quickly: plan to reserve your rental several weeks in advance.
Our tips for driving in northern Madagascar
If you choose to drive yourself, here is what you need to know before you go:
- Driving licence: bring your national licence and an International Driving Permit, often requested at checkpoints.
- Side of the road: traffic drives on the right.
- Fuel: fill up in Diego Suarez, Ambilobe or Ambanja. Between towns, petrol stations are rare.
- No night driving: poorly lit roads, pedestrians, zebus and carts on the road. Plan to arrive before nightfall, around 6 pm.
- Police checkpoints: they are frequent. Always carry your papers and the vehicle’s documents, and stay polite.
- Travel times: allow plenty of time. On tracks, you often drive at 20 to 30 km/h.
- Cash: many small shops, car parks and park entrances are paid in ariary.
- Phone signal: it disappears in places. Download offline maps before you leave.
With a driver, you don’t have to deal with any of this: they know the roads, the checkpoints and the best places to stop along the way. Yes. Self-drive rental is available for experienced drivers holding their national licence and an International Driving Permit. In the north, we mainly recommend it for itineraries on paved roads and during the dry season.

Do the drivers speak French or English?
Our driver-guides speak French and Malagasy, which makes things easier on the road, in villages and at checkpoints. Let us know if you need an English-speaking driver.
Can I pick up the car at Diego Suarez airport?
Yes, the vehicle can be handed over at Arrachart airport, at your hotel or in town, whichever suits you best. Simply mention it in your quote request.
